STEP AP203,
AP214 and AP242

What is the difference between the STEP Application Protocols: AP203, AP214, AP242?

Glossary article

STEP Application Protocols:
AP203, AP214 and AP242

STEP or STP is a standard file format in 3D design.

Definition: The various STEP Application Protocols (APs), such as AP203, AP214 and AP242, are all based on the same set of Integrate Resources (IRs). The STEP AP214 and STEP AP242 protocols can be seen as an extension of the STEP AP203 protocol.

For example, the AP203, AP214 and AP242 protocols all use the same definitions for three-dimensional geometry, assembly data and basic product information. Even though the three protocols have different special features, the main difference lies in the management of colours.

AP203, AP214 and AP242

Differences and similarities of the STEP application protocols: AP203, AP214 and AP242.

  • AP203: Configuration Controlled 3d Designs of Mechanical Parts and Assemblies (short: Configuration Controlled Designs)

The STEP AP203 protocol is used for mechanical environments. In short, AP203 is a "general" STEP format. STEP AP203 defines geometry, topology and configuration management data of solid models for mechanical parts and assemblies. AP203 does not manage colours.

  • AP214: Core Data for Automotive Mechanical Design Processes (short: Automotive Design)

The STEP AP214 protocol is used for vehicle environments. STEP AP214 can be seen as an extension of STEP AP203. The AP214 application protocol contains everything from AP203, but also manages colours.

  • AP242: Managed Model Based 3D Engineering

The STEP AP242 protocol is used for model-based 3D engineering. STEP AP242 is the further development of the AP214 file format standard. AP242 can contain 3D product and manufacturing information (PMI) in addition to the CAD data.
