AS9102 Rev C
AS9102 First Article Inspection Report (FAIR)
In the aerospace and defence industry, precision, quality and compliance with strict standards are of great importance. As the industry evolves, so do the standards that apply to it.
New standard: AS9102 Revision C follows AS9102 Revision B
One of the latest developments in this regard is the transition from AS9102 Rev B to Rev C. Revision C of the AS9102 standard was published in June 2023. Further down in this article you will find an overview of the most important changes to AS9102 Rev C in Forms 1, 2 and 3.
The aerospace standard AS9102, which specifies the procedures for carrying out and documenting First Article Inspections (FAI) - has been under revision since 2019 under the leadership of the International Aerospace Quality Group (IAQG) (Revision C). The aim of this revision is to align the standard more closely with the section on verification of the production process in accordance with AS9100. This update aims to improve the planning, assessment and re-fulfilment activities while improving the documentation forms for FAI reports (FAIR).

AS9102 Rev B versus Rev C
In this article, we will focus on the changes that can be made directly to the Forms 1, 2 and 3 and not to all changes to the standard. The most important changes in Form 1 at a glance:
AS9102 Rev B versus Rev C
Field 4: The "FAI Report number" has been renamed "FAIR Identifier" on all three forms.
Field 12: "P.O. number" was renamed "Purchase Order Number".
Field 13: "Detail Part & Assembly FAI" has been renamed "Detail & Part".
Field 14: "Reason for Partial FAI" is now called "Reason for Full / Partial FAI" and is mandatory for all FAIs.
Field 18: The field name of the form has been changed only slightly: "FAIR Number" now becomes "FAIR Identifier" in all three forms. The AS9102 standard states: "If no FAIR Identifier is available, enter the organisation's identifier for the FAI or approved configuration." The abbreviation N/A should not be used.
Field 19: "FAI Complete / FAI Not Complete" has been renamed "Does FAIR Contain a Documented Nonconformance(s)?" Note: Signature and date (formerly field 19) have been moved to fields 20 and 21 in Rev. C.
Field 20: The field name "Signature" has been renamed to "FAIR Reviewed By". Note: The new fields "FAIR Reviewed By" (field 20) and "FAIR Approved/Reviewed By" (field 22) should be filled in by the organisation issuing the FAIR, but the AS9102 standard now states that the person specified in field 22 should not be the same as the person specified in field 20.
Summary boxes 19, 20, 21, 22 - The former Field 19 "Signature" and Field 21 "Reviewed By" have been updated to Field 20 "FAIR Reviewed By" and Field 22 "FAIR Approved/Reviewed By" (FAIR Approved/Reviewed By).
Field 24: "Customer Approval & Date" was previously optional (O) and is now mandatory in certain cases (CR).
The most important changes in Form 2 at a glance:
AS9102 Rev B versus Rev C
Field 14 (formerly): In revision B, a signature (plus date in field 15) was required on form 2 and form 3. With revision C, only a signature is now required on form 1.
It is worth mentioning that new wording has been added to section 1.3 of Form 2 with regard to suppliers that carry out "special processes". The AS9102 standard now explicitly stipulates that the requirements should also be passed on to suppliers that carry out special processes.
The most important changes in Form 3 at a glance:
AS9102 Rev B versus Rev C
Field 14 (formerly): The field "Additional Data / Comments" has been renamed "Field 12" in revision C.
In Form 3, the only important change is the deletion of the signature field plus date (formerly field 14). This leads to a renaming of column 14 to column 12.
