Initial sample inspection (EMP)

Initial sample inspection to ensure the product quality of series production.

Glossary article

first article inspection

Before a product goes into series production, an initial sample inspection is carried out to ensure product quality.

Definition: Initial sample testing (EMP) is a central component of quality management in industrial production. Its aim is to identify potential defects in the product before the start of series production.

Before the start of the initial sample inspection, a test is carried out under realistic conditions. Initial Sample which is then to be produced in series. This is then thoroughly tested and measured during an initial sample inspection, and the target and actual values of the component or product are recorded in the Erstmusterprüfbericht (EMPB) documented. The subsequent production process is based on the results of the initial sample inspection and the values and specifications for the initial sample recorded in the EMPB.

The initial sample inspection, also known as sampling or initial sampling, therefore comprises the intensive testing of components or products that are to be produced in series according to a catalogue of criteria defined in the EMPB.

In English one speaks of the First Article Inspection (FAI).

Initial sample inspection (EMP)
Die Abkürzung EMP steht für Erstmusterprüfung.

When is an initial sample inspection carried out?

The start of series production is initiated by the initial sample inspection. The initial sample inspection offers the opportunity to completely check the manufactured parts once again and thus prevent errors in series production. In the initial sample inspection report, which documents the initial sample inspection in writing, the target and actual values of a component or product are defined and sent to the supplier. After production, the actual values are checked against the values stored in the EMPB.

Reasons for an initial sample inspection are, for example

  • Start of serial production
  • Redesign of a product
  • Quality inspection
  • Relocation of the production site

Initial sampling and follow-up sampling

In sampling, a distinction is made between initial sampling and follow-up sampling. Follow-up sampling takes place, for example, if production has been interrupted for a longer period of time or there have been changes to the production process.
